Melville Glades Golf Club’s Senior Men’s Pennants teams were both in action this week, with our 4BBB side travelling to Pinjarra and our Division 2 Individual team competing at WAGC (Yokine). While results didn’t quite fall our way, both teams produced strong efforts and several matches went right down to the final holes.
4BBB Senior Pennants
The new-look MGGC 4BBB Seniors team made the trip to Pinjarra eager to start the 2026 season strongly, but unfortunately ran into some quality opposition on the day.
Gary Dreyer and Paul Ramsey, along with Kim Matthews and Frank Starkey, both faced particularly sharp short-game performances from their opponents, going down 7/6 and 4/3 respectively. Haydn Corbett and Ken Adey, and Nick Pritchard and Dominic Hyde, each fought tight matches all the way to the finish but narrowly lost 2/0 and 1/0.
The highlight of the day came from Simon Hird and Selwyn Poi, who secured a confident 4/3 win.
The team now looks forward to the return fixture against Pinjarra at home next Tuesday, where home-course advantage will hopefully help even the ledger.
Senior Men’s Individual Pennants – Division 2
Our Division 2 Individual team travelled to WAGC and were greeted with fast, true greens and a course presented in excellent condition. Despite the final scoreline, the matches were extremely competitive across the board.
It was also great to welcome two players into the side this year:
- Jinho Jo, a new MGGC member playing off 2
- Peter Waters, a long-time member making his Individual Senior Pennants debut
Match results included:
- Andy Macdonald battled strongly in his first time playing at number 5 for some time, narrowly losing 2 down
- Peter Waters showed great resilience to fight back for a half
- Nigel Williams’ captain’s contest went to the final hole, finishing 1 down
- Sam Gill also pushed his opponent to the last before losing 1 down
- Jinho Jo produced a composed performance to secure a valuable half
Final result: WAGC 4 – MGGC 1
Encouragingly, all five matches went to the 18th hole, highlighting just how close the contest was. With continued preparation and a bit of luck, the team will be aiming to convert those tight finishes in the coming rounds.
Best of luck to both Senior Pennants teams next week.
