In the Senior Men’s 4BBB Pennants Final for the green division, our boys played Cottesloe at Wanneroo last Monday. We finished the day with two wins, one loss and two drawn matches. It was a hard slog all day although Kim Matthews and Frank Starkey won easily 7 and 6, whilst Davy Owen and Matt Thomas secured a 3 and 1 win. Dean King and Nick Pritchard went down 2 and 1 whilst Alan Thomas and Haydn Corbett and Gary Dreyer and Bruce Gliddon (down 4 after 5 holes) squared their matches.

Up 2 -1 and with 2 drawn matches we thought we had won so we high fived and started to celebrate only to be told that in a final there needs to be a majority win, meaning 3 games out of 5. Given it was dark, and we could hardly see the ball on the final hole we had to go back and play a sudden death hole for the two drawn games. So off we went Friday all the way back to Wanneroo with high hopes of securing a win from either of the two games.

The boys were nervous, and it showed as our first drive went into the trees, never to be seen again – oops!

But we need not worry. Haydn Corbett sent his drive down the middle, struck the best 5 iron he has ever hit onto the green and with 2 putts secured the win and the Pennant. With that in the bag Gary and Bruce, who were playing behind them, picked up and we all celebrated the win.

It was a drawn-out event over two days, but the boys were worthy winners. The camaraderie and competitive spirit was evident all season and we were delighted to go back-to-back and bring another pennant back to Melville Glades.
